On Monday, Dr. Magnus Ressel gave a fantastic talk on the scholarly discourse surrounding Barbary Coast slavery between 1600 and 1800. He made a strong point with connecting the shifting image of the Barbary corsairs with the emerging abolitionist movement and further elaborated on possible explanations for the widespread lack of knowledge surrounding this interesting topic. Espeacially his assessment of the current state of research and scholarly disputes within the field led to a lively discussion.
