Theoretical foundations and practical elaboration of Frame-Based Terminology
Irene Jimenez Alonso
Frame-Based Terminology (FBT) is a cognitive approach to terminology theory that focuses on the representation of domains and the relationships between terms within domains. In my dissertation I analyse FBT and intend to complement it with new views and case studies. FBT proposes the organisation of terms in a domain using frames, which are situated knowledge structures that highlight the role of terms in a process or event, as well as their relationships to other terms in the same frame. This gives terms their meaning in context. Frames are reflected linguistically in the lexical relations that form the basis of terminographic definitions. So far, FBT has been explained within specific projects, mainly in the environmental field, in order to cover domain-specific needs. The aim of my dissertation is to provide a practical guide to the general steps involved in creating frames, so that FBT can be applied to a wider range of domains. To this end, I will examine the theoretical foundations of FBT and apply the theory to represent different domains in three case studies. The domains are used for practical application, but also as a basis for theoretical description.
