Born on 15 February 1941, studies of English, German, pedagogy and philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg, Reading/Engl., Göttingen, Regensburg. German and Austrian citizen, PhD and habilitation at the U of Regensburg.
Chairholder for English Linguistics and Medieval English Literature at the U of Innsbruck from 1981 to 2009.
Publisher of twenty books and a hundred odd articles, compiler of the "Innsbruck Corpus of Middle English Prose", the "Innsbruck Corpus of Early English Letters (1386 to 1698)" and "English Dialect Dictionary Online". Director of the project "EDD Online" since 2011.
Visiting professor at the U of Mass. at Amherst, Mass./USA (1974/5), the U of Trento (1997), the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, the University of Dresden and the University of Turku/Finland (after 2000). Shorter periods of teaching at the universities of Nottingham Trent/England, Paris XII and Valencia/Spain (1990s).
