Architectural theory is a laboratory to expand on architecture through analyses, interpretations and speculations that seek to understand the discipline in its mutual relationships with social, cultural and technological processes. Research focuses on architecture at the intersection with new media and art, as well as on the correlation between theory and design.
The design studios foster conceptual and communicative skills. An important aspect of these studios is a text- and design-based research: writing and designing—designing and writing. Architectural theory has been established in 2006 at the University of Innsbruck and was led by Bart Lootsma from 2006 to 2022. The current team consists of architects and scholars in the humanities, who also work as designers and curators on issues directly pertaining to architectural theory.
Interim Head of Institute: Bettina Schlorhaufer, Dr. phil., Priv.-Doz.
