Life Courses in the Context of Three Generations
The LifE3G study is one of the few international longitudinal three-generation studies with an observation period of more than four decades. It began in 1979 as a longitudinal youth study with 1830 12-year-old children who were surveyed annually until the age of 16. Follow-up studies were conducted in 2002, 2012 and 2024. 1255 people from this anchor generation (G2) took part in the study from the age of 12 until the age of 57. They were asked about their educational, professional and social life histories, psychosocial development, values and intergenerational relationships. Largely parallel information was collected from their parents in 1980 and 1982 (G1: N= 988) and from a selected number of their children in 2012 (G3: N= 570). A survey of all children of the third generation (G3) is planned for 2025. In addition to the questions dominating the study on the longitudinal description and prognosis of life courses and development processes as well as the intergenerational exchange relationships between the three generations analysed, this expansion will also allow questions on the differential development of the children's generation (G3) in the context of sibling relationships to be investigated.
LifE3G is a joint project of the Universities of Innsbruck, Potsdam and Zurich.
