The Department of Public Law deals with Italian constitutional and regional law as well as Italian administrative law. One focus of research is South Tyrolean autonomy law, including the protection of linguistic minorities. Questions of regionalism and federalism are dealt with within the framework of the Federalism Research Centre, as are comparative law and legal terminology aspects of public law, as well as references to Union and international law in the research areas.

The Department of Criminal Law is dedicated to Italian criminal law and criminal procedure from a comparative law perspective. The main research areas include criminal law theory, criminal law in its constitutional, European and international contexts, as well as economic criminal law. In addition, special consideration is given to questions of medical and bio-law, sports law, juvenile criminal law and the complex of topics of criminal law and digitalisation. Finally, a central concern is the maintenance of German-Italian legal terminology with translations of Italian legal texts on criminal law and criminal procedure law into German. In addition, the research project "Mountain as a natural hazard: risk management and responsibility". has been in progress since October 2020.

The Tax Law Department deals with all aspects of Italian tax law. In addition, a focus is placed on comparative, European and international tax law. Particular attention is paid to issues of cross-border taxation, corporate taxation and capital gains taxation in an international context. In addition, questions of non-profit taxation are also examined.
