Katharina Mojescik, Dr.
Katharina Mojescik (PhD) is a PostDoc at the University of Innsbruck since November 2021. She studied Social Science at the Ruhr-University Bochum. She worked as a research assistant in several positions at the Ruhr-University Bochum, where she examined the practices of university teaching (project "FLOAT”, 2017-2020) as well as student use of media (project "Your Study”, 2018-2020). She holds a PhD in Social Science from the Ruhr-University Bochum (2021). In her dissertation, she analysed food trucks as an example for self-employment and entrepreneurial activities in gastronomy.

Katharina Mojescik is interested in the changing tendencies of employment with a focus on new forms of self-employment and entrepreneurship at the interface between the sociology of work, economic and organizational sociology.
Current research project:
Employment Trajectories of Digital Nomads. The interplay of digitalized work and mobility (01.01.2023 - 31.12.2023, funded by the Early Stage Funding of the UIBK).
Due to the corona pandemic, work has become more location-independent and digitalized for many employees. In the course of this, the social type of so-called digital nomads is gaining social and political relevance. Digital nomads are defined as people who can pursue their work location-independent and combine this with their desire for travel. They just need an internet connection to temporarily work and live in attractive locations. While digital nomads have so far been a marginal phenomenon, especially among freelancers in the IT sector, the work and lifestyle is becoming more popular among salaried employees. Prognoses indicate that almost a quarter of the workforce in North America and Europe will work remotely in the next few years. This project focuses on the various forms of digitalized work (dependent employment, self-employment, gig work) in order to explore how mobility is embedded in the employment trajectories of digital nomads and how the digitalized work routine is reconciled with expectations of mobility. So far, scholarly discourse has been limited to the lifestyles of digital nomads, while digitalized labor is understudied. In the qualitative research project, interviews with digital nomads, as well as field research in the "Digital Nomad Village" in Madeira will be used to explore the interrelationships of digitalization and mobility on work.
