Dissertation Project

Title: “Letters of princely women in France. The political correspondence of the Wittelsbach princesses Isabelle, Margaret and Jaqueline of Bavaria”

The dissertation aims to analyse the surviving letters of three Wittelsbach princesses who played a political key role in Western Europe at the beginning of the 15th century: Isabelle (Isabeau, 1370-1435), Jaqueline (1401-1436) and Margaret of Bavaria (1363-1423). The main focus of the project is a corpus of letters that have survived in wording and were sent by the princesses or were addressed to them (horizontal princely correspondence). However, vertical correspondence (administrative letters) will also be considered. The material, which was compiled in profound archival research, will be examined with regard to the princesses' room for action, which manifests itself through rhetorical techniques in the letters.
