AKME Salzburg 2025
The conference of Ancient Cultures of the Mediterranean (AKMe) took place from 31 January to 1 February 2025 in Paris Lodron University of Salzburg. Many doctoral candidates from partner universities, including Innsbruck, Graz and Salzburg Universities presented their doctoral dissertation. Raphael Szeider and Sina Kazemirashid participated in the program from the Doctoral College “Entangled Antiquities”.
SINA KAZEMIRASHID – Past Spaces, Present Narratives: Conceptualization of Ancient Spatial Perception in Contemporary Academic Discourse
Sina Kazemirashid presented the current status of his dissertational project on spatial perception during Seleucid and Arsacid periods, with a focus on four archaeological sites from these two eras. The presentation at the AKMe conference was focused on the theoretical framework and methodological considerations regarding the contextualisation and application of the contemporary theories known as "spatial turn", such as the "Third Space" by Edward Soja in historical and archaeological studies.
RAPHAEL SZEIDER - Hadrianus Augustus – Hadrian's references to the first Princeps
As part of the AKMe from 31 January to 1 February 2025 in Salzburg, Raphael Szeider gave a lecture on the references made by the Roman emperor Hadrian to the first Princeps Augustus. It was shown that Hadrian repeatedly referred to Augustus in a variety of striking ways. These references, in turn, were seen as a legitimisation strategy by Hadrian, who was heavily criticised by the Senate elite. The lecture was followed by a lively debate on the thesis presented.
