What is Livestreaming?

Livestreaming refers to a live transmission over the internet. During the livestream, students follow the transmission simultaneously (with a delay of approximately 20 seconds) but do not have a direct way to give feedback or communicate. The video is not permanently saved and is technically suitable for a large target audience (such as for lectures).

Do you want to set up a feedback channel for your students?

Streaming a lecture from a lecture hall: preparations

To stream your lecture from a lecture hall that is capable of streaming, the following preparations must be made:

  • Mark your lecture in VIS:online with the "eLearning portion."
  • Streaming requires a room reservation (FSS) for your lecture. Check if the lecture hall is properly booked for your dates.
  • Create a "Video Livestream" course element in your OpenOlat course. Help can be found in HelpCard 32-010. You should now see the booked dates in the building block. If you have an autonomous OpenOlat course, or if the dates do not appear, please contact av-studio@uibk.ac.at.

The course element synchronizes the dates from VIS:online - the stream is therefore only visible during the dates entered in VIS:online for the specified lecture hall!

If you want to stream lectures that are not related to a lecture, the livestream must be set up by the DMLT department. Please report the lecture with a sufficent lead time by email to av-studio@uibk.ac.at.

Starting the livestream in the lecture hall

Now all you have to do is start the stream in the lecture hall. The stream is about 30 seconds delayed, so wait a few seconds before you start the lecture.

  • The stream will include your presenter camera and the content you place on Projector B.
  • Don't forget to use a microphone, otherwise the sound won't be transmitted. In addition to the podium microphone, you will find a headset and a handheld microphone in the drawer on the left side of the podium.

Livestreaming from Your Own PC/Laptop

With some preparation, you can also livestream from home. All you need is a stable internet connection, a headset/microphone, the OBS Studio program, which you can download for free, and possibly a webcam.

You can find all information about OBS Studio here.

If you want to livestream with OBS, please contact the AV team of the Digital Media and Learning Technologies department at av-studio@uibk.ac.at. You will then receive all settings that you need to make in OBS.

Please also send us the link to the desired OpenOlat course and the dates that should be transmitted. We will set up the livestream so that it can be accessed directly through OpenOlat at the specified times.

OBS Studio in Seminar and User Rooms at the University of Innsbruck

You only need to set up the program once on a public PC, then your personal settings will be transferred to other public PCs and you can stream from the seminar rooms.

Making a Livestream Publicly Available

If you want to make a livestream available outside of OpenOlat or make it available to guests in OpenOlat, please contact the Digital Media and Learning Technologies department.
