40-030 Creating a test as a learning resource

Overview

Tests are created as a learning resource and then integrated into one or more courses for performance assessment, to check the current level of knowledge or also as an online exam. To do this, we recommend that you first create the questions in the question bank or import them there (HelpCard 40-010 or HelpCard 40-020) and then use them to create a test as a learning resource. In this HelpCard you will learn how to create a test. How to integrate a test into a course is described in HelpCard 40-040.

Important Steps

  1. Click Authoring in the main menu. The autoring opens.
  2. Click the Create button. A drop-down menu opens.
  3. Select Test in this menu. The Test dialog box opens.
  4. Enter a title and click Create. Avoid umlauts and special characters, except () / \ - _. You are now in the settings of your test.
  5. Click on Administration in the upper left corner and then on Edit Content. The test editor opens.
  6. Click on the top structure element with the name of the test. Here you can optionally set various parameters.
    • Under Test configuration, for example, the title of the test and a time limit can be set. The Max.score is calculated from the sum of the possible points of all questions.
    • Under Expert, the number of solution attempts can be limited, among other things.
  7. A section (used to structure the content of the test) and a question (single choice) are already automatically created as examples.
  8. Click on the section on the left in the test structure and give the section a title. If you want the questions to be offered to students in a random order, select Yes here for Random order of questions or sections?. Under Number of questions in this section, select how many questions you want to display on the test. Save your changes.
  9. In the Expert tab you can make further settings for this section. Inherited means that you take over the settings from the section above or from the entire test.
  10. Click on Add elements at the top and select the Import questions from pool option there. Select the questions with a check mark at the very left and confirm this selection at the very bottom of the page with Select. The individual questions can be moved into the desired order in the test using Drag&Drop.
  11. Only questions that the respective test can also display are offered for import.
  12. Questions can also be created directly in a test. Although these are not automatically synchronized with the question pool, they can be exported there (see HelpCard 40-020).
  13. Delete questions by clicking on them in the structure, then select the Delete button at the top right and confirm with Yes. The question is now deleted from the structure on the left.
  14. Click on Add elements at the top and then on Section or Test Part to create another section or test part in the test menu, if necessary. Sections divide the questions into different sections that students can switch between as they wish. Test parts, on the other hand, divide the test, i.e. the students only see the questions of the part they are in and they have to finish the part in order to move on to the next one. It is not possible for them to return to the questions of a finished part. The number of sections and parts per test is not limited.
  15. You will find a helpful overview of your questions in the Test Configuration overview at the top right.
  16. Once you have made all the changes, you can close the test editor with the red X at the top right. This will take you to the test view.
  17. In the test view, you can go through the entire test once to check it. Answer the questions, save the answers and finally click on Finish Test or Finish Test Part and confirm with OK.
  18. After you have created the test, you have to integrate it into the desired course (see HelpCard 40-040). Please note: After a test is carried out for the first time in a course, editing is only possible to a limited extent!
