Master’s Programme in Environmental Management of Mountain Areas (EMMA)

The EMMA program is an interdisciplinary and international master's program offered in cooperation with the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy . This double-degree program, conducted in English, focuses on sustainable landscape development as well as ecosystem and agro-ecosystem management in mountain areas. It provides insights and knowledge on topics supporting the environmental management of mountain regions, including Alpine ecology, landscape ecology and planning, agriculture and forestry, wastewater and waste treatment, geoinformatics, and environmental and resource management.

In the first year, held at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, all students complete mandatory basic courses (30 ECTS) during the first semester. Subsequently, students choose between two optional curricula (30 ECTS) that focus either on sustainable agriculture or environmental protection.

The second year, conducted at the University of Innsbruck, includes one compulsory module (7.5 ECTS) and several elective modules (22.5 ECTS), allowing students to select modules based on their personal interests and career goals. Most courses are offered in the 3rd (winter semester) as the 4th semester is mainly dedicated to the writing of the Master’s Thesis (28 ECTS).
