Keynote speech by Fabian Ochs at BauSIM 2024 in Vienna

Fabian Ochs presents on the topic of Holistic building and HVAC modelling - a prerequisite for efficient heat pump systems

In the course of the electrification of the building stock, the heating of buildings will be dominated by heat pumps (HP), especially in areas without access to district heating. However, the integration of HPs into existing apartment blocks in urban environments presents numerous challenges and requires a number of decisions to be made. To enable effective planning in the critical early stages of the design process, building physics engineers, HVAC designers and energy consultants need reliable planning tools and databases. Close collaboration through an integrated design process is also necessary.

A comprehensive workflow has been developed to evaluate, compare and optimise different thermal refurbishment options and heat pump system solutions for multi-family residential buildings. These options include different renovation depths and the degree of invasiveness. With regard to heat pump system solutions, centralised, semi-centralised, decentralised and mixed heat pump systems are considered. Distribution and storage losses as well as the heat pump output, which depends on the heating load of the building, the heat output systems and the required flow temperature, are also taken into account. Finally, the integration of on-site renewable energy sources (e.g. PV) and thermal and electrical storage systems is also taken into account.
