Workshop - Smartcity Baumgarten and PhaseOut

PhaseOutand Smartcity tree gardenare two pioneering projects that aim to demonstrate innovative concepts for phasing out gas with thermal energy refurbishment of apartment buildings in inner-city areas, in this case Vienna.

As part of the two projects, various technologies are being implemented and evaluated and optimised as part of scientific monitoring.

In the case of Smartcity tree garden, the flats are supplied with 100% renewable energy for heating, cooling and electricity via an anergy network including a geothermal probe field between the properties. The innovative concept makes it possible for neighbouring communities to share locally generated renewable energy via a low-temperature microgrid. As Austria's first renewable energy community for HEAT and ELECTRICITY, the demonstration project is developing a forward-looking alternative for urban areas that lie outside the district heating network.

The aim of the PhaseOut project is to design, optimise, implement, demonstrate and evaluate innovative and minimally invasive refurbishment solutions (thermal refurbishment and heating system replacement) using heat pumps and photovoltaics in seven identical multi-storey residential buildings. A comprehensive comparison of different variants of technical solutions based on modular and scalable technology systems and multifunctional building components for the replacement of decentralised gas heating systems with centralised, semi-centralised and decentralised heat pump solutions is being carried out.

A workshop was organised in Vienna, where the teams from both projects had the opportunity to share the knowledge and experience they had gained to date. During the subsequent joint tour of the two "City of the Future" research projects, district head Michaela Schüchner also expressed her delight at the high density of research projects in Penzing.

The following presentations provide an overview of the individual projects:
