Thermal engineering laboratory

In the Unit of Energy Efficient Building, we operate a state-of-the-art heating technology laboratory in which heat pumps, storage tanks, combustion systems and complete systems are comprehensively tested. A particular focus here is on hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) technology, in which real components are linked to computer simulations in real time.

Our laboratory offers a wide range of heat sources and sinks with which systems and solutions can be precisely measured - up to a power of 25 kW. This enables us to carry out comprehensive tests under realistic conditions.

Thanks to the full integration of HiL, heat pumps, for example, can be directly coupled with digital simulations in laboratory operation. This allows the complete behaviour of a building to be mapped on the PC while the heat pump is operating in a real operating environment.

HiL opens up a wide range of possibilities: In addition to dynamic tests, our focus is on the development and optimisation of control systems for the devices used.
