IEA HPT Annex 63 - Placement Impact on Heat Pump Acoustics

Project leader overall project: Christoph Reichl (AIT - Austrian Institute of Technology, Vienna)

Project leader University of Innsbruck: Fabian Ochs

Project staff: William Monteleone

Project partner:

  • AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH
  • Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) - Institute for Sound Research
  • TU Graz - Institute for Thermal Engineering
  • TU Vienna - Institute for Materials Technology, Building Physics and Building Ecology

Funding organisation: FFG-IEA research cooperation

Duration: 01/2023 - 12/2025

Summary of the project

Noise emissions from heat pumps represent a potential barrier to a broad market diffusion of this energy efficiency technology, especially in urban areas. In this project, the influences of noise emissions in the building and in the neighbourhood are characterised, their psychoacoustic effects are analysed in more detail and tools for digitally supporting heat pump placement are further developed. The results will be communicated to relevant target groups in the form of guidelines and documentation.
