Leonardo Supercomputer No. 4 worldwide

The Top500 ranking of the fastest supercomputers worldwide, released twice per year, celebrates its 60th edition. Frontier of the Oak Ridge National Lab in the US still leads the field, but Leonardo, a new supercomputer in Italy and with Austrian contribution, is ranked 4th with a measured performance of 174.7 Petaflops.

The European supercomputer Leonardo, hosted and managed by CINECA in Bologna, is one of three pre-exascale systems announced by EuroHPC JU and the first one to be operational. This is also of high relevance to Austrian researchers, given that Austria is one of the 6 hosting entity consortium members.

The Atos BullSequana XH2000 supercomputer is equipped with Intel Xeon Platinum 8358 of the Ice Lake-SP generation, each with 32 cores at 2.6 GHz. However, the coprocessors of the type Nvidia A100 in the SXM variant with 40 GB memory (HBM2) provide the lion's share of the computing power. Of the total of 1,463,616 cores, 1,374,912 are provided by the A100 modules alone. Further technical details can be found on the Leonardo website.

There's currently a Leonardo Early Access Program (LEAP) in place that aims to offer computing access to the Booster module. Access is tentatively planned from January 2023 to March 2023, proposals have to be submitted by November 30, 2022. Further information can be found on the call page.
