Redesigning the Weald and Downland Gridshell Using Bent and Twisted Spatial Structures

LSU participated in the 16th Annual Symposium of Architectural Research (ATUT 2024) at Aalto University, Espoo, Finland. On 7th of November 2024, Fereshteh Khojastehmehr presented a research paper titled "Redesigning the Weald and Downland Gridshell Using Bent and Twisted Spatial Structures" in the Proactive Design Strategies: Novel Methodologies and Methods of Design and Research session. This work, co-authored with Prof. Günther H. Filz, explores the potential of bent and twisted spatial structures to revitalize elastic gridshells. Using the well-known Weald and Downland Gridshell as a case study, the paper presents the redesign of the structure with combined geodesic-asymptotic patterns, comparing the original and redesigned versions from both architectural and structural perspectives.
