What is 3MT?

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that challenges doctoral students to present their research in just three minutes using a single visual slide. Developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, the format encourages participants to distill their complex research topics into concise, engaging narratives that are accessible to a general audience.

Key Features of 3MT:
  • Time Limit: Each presentation is strictly limited to three minutes, pushing participants to focus on the core aspects of their research.
  • Visual Aid: Participants are allowed only one static slide to support their presentation, emphasizing clarity and creativity in their communication.
  • Audience Engagement: The format is designed to engage and inform audiences, making it easier for non-experts to understand and appreciate the significance of the research.
  • Judging Criteria: Presentations are evaluated based on clarity, engagement, and the ability to communicate the research's impact.

3MT not only helps students improve their public speaking and presentation skills but also fosters a sense of community among scholars and encourages interdisciplinary dialogue.
