The Materials Science working group regularly supervises Bachelor's and Master's theses in the fields of materials science and additive manufacturing. We attach great importance to offering students exciting and practical topics that are highly relevant to the entire working group.

Description
Molybdenum shows epitaxially grown columnar crystalline grains during laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). The aim is to investigate whether a grain refinement effect can be achieved by adding an alloying element that increases the undercooling of the melt at the solidification front.

Within the scope of the work, defined sample bodies of aluminum alloys are produced by powder bed laser beam melting (PBF-LB) in order to analyze their high-frequency properties.

Description
The work investigates the feasibility of an in-situ closed-loop control system for laser power control during the laser-based powder bed melting process (PBF-LB). The focus is on the analysis of process parameters and their influence on control accuracy and process stability. Basic knowledge in Python is an advantage.

Description
The focus of the bachelor thesis is the quantification of the optical density of near-surface defects that occur during the additive manufacturing of components made of refractory metals such as molybdenum. The defect structure and frequency will be determined using an automated image analysis technique.
