Missomelius, Petra, Dr phil. Mag phil., studied Modern German Literature and Media, European Ethnology and Cultural Research as well as Fine Arts at the Philipps University in Marburg. She completed her doctorate there in 2006 on "Digital Media Culture. Media Configurations and Perception". From 2001, she worked as a research assistant at the Department of German Studies at the Faculty of German Philology and Art Studies at the Philipps University of Marburg, researching media art, film analysis and film knowledge, digital photography and imaging processes in the natural sciences as well as media education.
She has been at Leopold Franzens University since 2012, initially at the Faculty of Education (Department of Media Education and Communication Culture). With the founding of the Department of Media, Society and Communication at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
She was involved in the development and implementation of the new school subject "Digital Basic Education" in Austria since 2022 and also teaches this as a teacher. Her habilitation thesis "Bildung in transformativen Medienkulturen. Building blocks for mature orientation in the binary" was published in 2021 under the title "Bildung - Medien - Mensch. Mündigkeit im Digitalen" is available for download in the GEI repository.
Main areas of work: Media education; media, body and technology theories; (moving) image cultures; emerging media; media practices, especially the use of wearables.
