Theo Hug is Professor of Educational Sciences specialising in media education and communication culture at the Department of Media, Society and Communication at the University of Innsbruck. He researches and teaches in the fields of media education, media literacy and basic digital education, educational, media and knowledge theory, mobile learning and microlearning as well as methodology and philosophy of science.

He has held various visiting professorships and teaching positions in Vienna, Bolzano, Graz, Krems, Schloss Hofen (Vorarlberg), Salzburg and Brisbane (AU), and in 2005 he was a visiting scholar in the Comparative Media Studies (CMS) programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, MA (USA).

From 2004 to 2024 he was speaker of the interfaculty forum Innsbruck Media Studies at the University of Innsbruck, from 2003 to 2006 he headed the ARC Research Studio eLearning Environments. Since 2011, together with Josef Mitterer, he has been the administrator of the Ernst von Glasersfeld Archive (https://www.evg-archive.net/). From 2020 to 2024, he was head of the Department of Media, Society and Communication and has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2015.
