Open Access publishing in Elsevier journals
Articles from FWF-funded projects published in journals that are part of this agreement can be published open access free of charge until the end of 2027 at the latest.
Please note that the criteria listed below must be met. In addition, the following FWF requirements must be complied with:
- the article must be published with a CC BY licence
- the acknowledgement must contain the following text:
This research was funded in whole / in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.
or for German-language publications:

Please make sure to enter the grant DOI instead of the project number.
Since January 2021, a new offer allows university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck to publish open access free of charge in gold open access journals of Elsevier in addition to hybrid journals. Hence, members of both universities can publish open access in many journals free of charge. All participating journals are listed here.
The offer applies to articles submitted to hybrid journals starting from 1 January 2020 and to articles submitted to gold open access journal starting from 1 January 2021.
Please note: in pure Gold Open Access journals, the number of articles is limited, i.e. not all articles can be published Open Access free of charge under our agreement. It is first come, first served!
From 01.01.2024, the acceptance date is the relevant date for Elsevier.
Which journals can researchers of the university publish in?
You can publish open access in many hybrid journals and gold open access journals. You can find a list of all eligible journals here.
Who can publish open access?
Eligible are authors, who
- are corresponding authors of the articles
- are university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck
- use their institutional email address in the process of submission
- submit an article to an Elsevier hybrid journal after 31 December 2019, which will then be accepted:
are publishing an article of the type full-length article, review article, case report, data-in-brief, microarticles, original software publication, practice guideline, protocol, replication studies, short communication, short survey and video article in a hybrid journal - submit an article to an Elsevier pure open access journal after 31 December 2020, which will then be accepted:
are publishing an article of the type full-length article or review article in a pure open access journal
ATTENTION: It is not permitted to retrospectively change the corresponding author after peer review.
Procedure/Verification Process:
Please indicate your affiliation to the University of Innsbruck or the Medical University of Innsbruck when submitting the article. The verification of the authors' affiliation with the universities is based on the indication of the institution and the use of the institutional email domain. After the authorisation through the University Library, the author will receive a licence agreement by Elsevier, which he/she must sign and return to the publisher – via the author dashboard – together with the selected CC licence.
IMPORTANT NOTE on the impact factor: For some of its subscription-based journals, Elsevier has established corresponding gold open access journals, so-called mirror journals.
You can recognise these mirror journals by the suffix X in the title. Please note that the impact factor of these journals is usually lower than that of the corresponding subscription-based journal.
