Open access publishing in IEEE journals
Articles from FWF-funded projects published in journals that are part of this agreement can be published open access free of charge until the end of 2027 at the latest.
Please note that the criteria listed below must be met. In addition, the following FWF requirements must be complied with:
- the article must be published with a CC BY licence
- the acknowledgement must contain the following text:
This research was funded in whole / in part by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [grant DOI]. For open access purposes, the author has applied a CC BY public copyright license to any author accepted manuscript version arising from this submission.

Please make sure to enter the grant DOI instead of the project number. - Conference proceedings are not part of the agreement with IEEE - for FWF-funded articles in proceedings the following applies: the "Author Accepted Manuscript" may be deposited with the CC BY license in a repository without embargo - not before publication of the publisher's version.
!!ATTENTION!! For the year 2024 the article allocation at IEEE is exhausted. Articles can no longer be published free of charge via our Open Access agreement until the end of the year. The APC invoice goes directly to the authors (01.10.2024).
From 30 November 2021 until 31 December 2024, a new offer allows university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck to publish open access in IEEE journal content free of charge. Members of the University of Innsbruck can publish open access in 158 hybrid journals and in more than 20 IEEE gold open access journals for free and also have access to the entire portfolio of the publisher.
Which journals can researchers of the university publish in?
You can publish open access in more than 20 IEEE gold open access journals and in 158 hybrid journals of IEEE . A title list is available here.
Who can publish open access?
Eligible are authors, who
- are submitting corresponding authors of the articles
- are university members with active employment contracts or students of the University of Innsbruck
- use their institutional email address in the process of submission
- whose article was accepted in a IEEE journal
- are publishing a peer reviewed article
ATTENTION: It is not permitted to retrospectively change the corresponding author after peer review.
Procedure/Verification Process:
Please indicate your affiliation to the University of Innsbruck when submitting the article. The verification of authors' affiliation with the university is based on the indication of the institution and the use of the institutional email domain.
The affiliation is verified by IEEE and the university/university library.
The article is published with a Creative Commons licence.
