Open Access publication funding

Not all open access journals charge publication fees for the publication of articles; non-commercial publishers in particular often receive institutional funding. However, many publishers and journals rely on article processing charges (APCs) as a business model for open access. In order to provide financial and organisational support to researchers at the University of Innsbruck, a central publication fund is available to co-finance these fees in open access journals.

The allocation of funding from the publication fund of the University of Innsbruck is carried out by the Vice-Rectorate for Research in accordance with the following allocation guidelines.

  1. Funding is available for publications in open access journals that are listed at Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and implement suitable quality assurance measures (such as peer review). The article must be freely accessible immediately after publication and its distribution must be authorised.
  2. Publications written as part of projects that provide for OA funding (e.g. EU and FWF projects) are not eligible for funding. The free purchase of articles from journals that are in principle subject to subscription is also not funded ("hybrid journals"). This also includes articles in so-called mirror journals, which are listed in the DOAJ as open access offshoots of closed access journals, but are essentially a special form of hybrid journals.
  3. A maximum of three publications per year and author or working group are funded.
  4. The maximum amount of funding from the publication fund is 1,000 euros, whereby partial funding by the faculty, institute and/or working group is obligatory. The publication fund therefore doubles the funds provided by the faculty, the institute and/or the working group up to a maximum amount of EUR 1,000.
  5. The first author, submitting author or corresponding author is a member of the University of Innsbruck. This is clearly indicated by a corresponding affiliation with the University of Innsbruck.
  6. Funding by the University of Innsbruck is mentioned in an acknowledgement in the paper.
  7. All Open Access articles funded by the University of Innsbruck are uploaded to Repository for publications of the University of Innsbruck. The author is responsible for the entry of the publication in the FLD database.

Please note that publication fees for monographs and edited volumes (book processing charges (BPC)) cannot be funded in full. However, funding in accordance with the award criteria and the maximum funding amount specified is possible and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.


As part of the FWF programme "Book Publications", the FWF funds open access monographs and edited volumes up to a maximum of EUR 22,000.

An informal application to Forschung@uibk.ac.at is sufficient. Please enclose a cost estimate including the manuscript or the publication invoice and (if already available) the DOI.

The University and Provincial Library of Tyrol has signed agreements with many publishers that enable members of the university to publish their research results free of charge in renowned (subscription) open access journals. An overview of all agreements, including the journals included and the applicable conditions, can be found here. Please note that additional conditions apply to FWF articles with regard to the licence and acknowledgement including grant DOI.

Open Access publications resulting from FWF projects will be funded directly by the University of Innsbruck from 1 January 2024 and can no longer be submitted to the FWF.
