Climate report for Austria

Since March 2022, 125 experts from the Austrian climate, biodiversity and sustainability research community have been working on the 2nd National Assessment Report on Climate Change in Austria (AAR2). The aim of the report is to analyse the situation in Austria in detail and to identify transformation pathways towards climate neutrality in Austria. The report will be completed in summer 2025.

The effects of climate change have long been found in all areas and across society, such as in agriculture and forestry, in the healthcare system, in questions of mobility, in tourism or in relation to ecosystem services. With this in mind, the authors of the Austrian Assessment Report endeavour to conduct a scientific survey and assessment of the past, current and potential future effects of climate change in Austria, focusing on both national and regional circumstances. A key concern of the renowned experts from a wide range of disciplines is to identify options for action: A significant part of the report will therefore be dedicated to the quantification of adaptation potentials as well as measures for the rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to the scientific review, the authors will engage in dialogue with various parts of civil society, interest groups and political decision-makers during the various phases of the project and gather feedback.

The AAR2 Co-Chairs are: Margreth Keiler, Keywan Riahi, Daniel Huppmann and Harald Rieder.

Interdisciplinary participation of Innsbruck researchers

Together with Margreth Keiler as project leader, 14 other researchers from the universities are working in a leading role:

Project title: APCC Assessment Report on Climate Change in Austria (AAR2)
Duration: 01.02.2022-30.06.2025
Following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Austrian Panel on Climate Change (APCC) was established at the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) in the course of the preparation of the first comprehensive Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change 2014 (AAR14). Renowned scientists from the Austrian climate research community regularly summarise the current state of research on climate change in Austria within the APCC. The 2nd Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change is financed by the Climate and Energy Fund, endowed by the Ministry of Climate Action.
