Barbara Schneider-Muntau is a university professor of soil mechanics at the Department of Infrastructure at the University of Innsbruck. In her research, Schneider-Muntau observes and measures geotechnical phenomena both in nature and in the laboratory and transfers these findings into realistic numerical models to gain a better understanding of processes. Natural hazards in mountainous regions, such as landslides and rockfalls, play an important role in her work.

About
Barbara Schneider-Muntau is a geotechnical engineer and specialist in the field of numerical modelling of natural hazards in the Alps. Her focus is on understanding processes and developing sustainable solutions, for example to monitor and, where possible, stabilise mountains that are already severely affected by the consequences of the climate crisis. In the high Alpine region in particular, the melting of glaciers and the associated loss of permafrost is a major potential danger for unstable steep slopes. Schneider-Muntau is the lead author of the 2nd Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change, which will be compiled by 120 scientists by 2025.
