Jan Beutel is Professor of Computer Engineering. His research interests focus on wireless sensor networks, which he uses to monitor changes in mountain areas. For the past 17 years, he has been investigating the condition of rocks, permafrost and the prevailing climate in an outdoor laboratory on the Matterhorn. His data help to assess climate change in mountain areas quantitatively, identify natural hazards and form the basis of forecasts.

About
Jan Beutel studied electrical engineering at ETH Zurich and the Berkeley Wireless Research Center. In Zurich he led an interdisciplinary research group for networked embedded systems. With his research, Jan Beutel has pioneered the use of wireless sensors in permanent environmental monitoring applications and the mitigation of natural hazards in real-time, particularly in high mountain and polar regions. He is active mountain guide (IFMGA) and partner in the Swiss Permafrost Monitoring Network (PERMOS).
