Preliminary Note

Students enrolled in the Bachelor's program in Political Science must complete 30 out of a total of 180 ECTS credits through elective modules.1 Of these, 15 ECTS credits can be fulfilled by completing an internship. The purpose of such an internship is to apply and test the knowledge and skills acquired during the studies in a future professional field, as well as to gain insight into potential career paths. The studies and the internship placement must be directly related. Possible institutions for completing the "political science practice" include parliaments, governments and administrations, public bodies, political parties, NGOs and interest groups, international organizations, media, educational institutions, or companies where political science skills are needed (such as political consulting). The "political science practice" must be completed at one institution and encompass at least 350 working hours.

Application

To enroll in the elective module "Political Science Practice," an agreement must be made before starting an internship. The necessary form can be found on the University of Innsbruck's website under "Forms" – "Internship Agreement": https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/programmes/ba-political-science/2007w/

You should submit the fully and correctly completed form in advance to the email address: politikwissenschaft@uibk.ac.at

Your application will be forwarded to the responsible person for approval.

Additionally, include a brief written justification in your email, explaining how the internship placement is related to your Bachelor's studies in Political Science.

You will receive a response to your application within a few days.

Internship Report

After completing your internship, you must write a report reflecting on your activities in the context of your studies. This involves:

  • Describing the environment or institution where you completed the internship.
  • Detailing your specific tasks and responsibilities.
  • Critically discussing the added value of your studies for the internship.
  • Analyzing whether and how the internship changed your perspective on the field of Political Science.
  • Evaluating the internship placement as a potential future career field for you and other graduates of the Bachelor's program in Political Science.

The report should be between twelve and fifteen pages long (Garamond font, size 11, 1.5 line spacing, justified alignment, standard MS Word margins). It should be submitted as a PDF, including confirmation of at least 350 working hours, to the following email address: politikwissenschaft@uibk.ac.at

Grade

Your report will be forwarded to the responsible person for grading. If the report meets the requirements, the completion of the "political science in practice" will be graded as "successfully participated." If the report does not meet the requirements, you will be asked to make improvements. Otherwise, this performance must be graded as "unsuccessfully participated."

Final Thesis and Completion of Studies

BA Political Science (2007W)

Legal framework and grading

The curriculum of the Bachelor's degree programme in Political Science (from 1 October 2020) provides for a Bachelor's thesis worth 7.5 ECTS-Credits (see § 6 of the curriculum, https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/programmes/ba-political-science/2007w/ under "General" - "complete version of the curriculum"). This Bachelor's thesis must be written as part of a compulsory module in accordance with § 5 para. 1, lines 10 to 17. Specifically, this is one of the following courses:

  • VU European Integration - Enhanced Level
  • VU Political System of Austria - Enhanced Level
  • VU Comparative Politics - Enhanced Level
  • VU International Relations - Enhanced Level
  • VU Political Communication and Electoral Analysis - Enhanced Level
  • VU Political Theory - Enhanced Level
  • VU Applied Methods - Enhanced Level
  • VU Gender Research

The Bachelor's thesis is an integral part of the VU. This means that the Bachelor's thesis as such and the other work in the seminar cannot be graded separately. In the event of a negative assessment of the seminar or the Bachelor's thesis, all performances must be repeated. The VU is therefore only graded positively if both the Bachelor's thesis and the actual course have been successfully completed.

The Bachelor's thesis is assessed no later than four weeks after submission with the grades ‘Very good’ (1), ‘Good’ (2), ‘Satisfactory’ (3), ‘Sufficient’ (4) or ‘Not sufficient’ (5). The VU is graded independently of the Bachelor's thesis. The overall grade (VU and Bachelor's thesis) is calculated from the weighted average of both grades. In concrete terms, this means that both the grade for the VU and the grade for the Bachelor's thesis each contribute 50% to the overall grade. However, both partial grades must be positive for a positive assessment.

The Bachelor's thesis can be written in a foreign language if the course instructor agrees. The Bachelor's thesis must be submitted in written and electronic form (pdf) or, in agreement with the course instructor, only electronically.

Content requirements

Bachelor's theses are papers that must fulfil the standards of political science in terms of content and methodology. By completing a Bachelor's thesis, students must prove that they are able to independently apply the theoretical and methodological tools of political science to a limited research question within a limited period of time. Formally, the Bachelor's thesis must comply with the rules for academic work.

The Bachelor's thesis has a total of 7.5 ECTS-Credits. This corresponds to 187.5 working hours (1 ECTS-Credits corresponds to 25 working hours). These 7.5 ECTS-Credits are in addition to the normal workload of the relevant VU (7.5 or 5 ECTS-Credits). The Bachelor's thesis should therefore not be a continuation of the VU thesis - the VU thesis and the Bachelor's thesis must deal with two different issues.

The Bachelor's thesis should be 9,000-10,000 words long and formatted in the form of a scientific paper (Garamond font; font size 11; 1.5 line spacing; justified text; standard MS Word margins, same citation style throughout). The following elements should also be included:

  • Cover sheet with all relevant information (author, title of the thesis, course title, course number, semester),
  • Table of contents,
  • Introduction (with problem definition, state of research, epistemological question, theory and method, results, approach),
  • Main part (with detailed argumentation),
  • Conclusion (summarising the results) ,
  • Bibliography (with all sources used and therefore also cited),
  • Declaration of academic honesty (Eidesstattliche Erklärung, see https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/programmes/ba-political-science/2007w/ - ‘Forms’).
Time schedule

Registration for the Bachelor's thesis is done directly with the course instructor of the relevant VU. It must be officially submitted via email by the second course unit (registration with the examinations office is not required).

The Bachelor's thesis must be submitted by 31 March at the latest (for VUs from the winter semester) or by 31 October at the latest (for VUs from the summer semester).

Together with the Bachelor's thesis, you also hand in the completed proof of the Bachelor's thesis (see https://www.uibk.ac.at/en/programmes/ba-political-science/2007w/ - ‘Forms’) in accordance with the curriculum, which is confirmed by the course instructor and forwarded to the Examination Office. The grade for the VU including the Bachelor's thesis will only be issued after the Bachelor's thesis has been submitted and graded.
