Civic Education Hub (CEHub)

About

As an exchange point between science and society, the CEHub focuses on three main areas:

1. The academic and social anchoring of civic education in Tyrol and the Euregio Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino

The CEHub aims to expand and continuously develop theoretically sound and empirically supported political didactic research, promote political knowledge and skills to strengthen democratic consensus across all age and population groups and thus close a gap in the political education landscape in Tyrol, in which various organisations are actively involved, but where sustainable coordination and networking of the offer is still lacking.

2. To train young academics in the research field of civic education

In addition to teacher training in the subject of civic education, civic education should also become more relevant as a topic of academic training and for final theses in other school subjects. Inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives allow the topic to be approached from different angles (e.g. political science, sociology, educational science, media and communication studies, literature studies) and should be promoted accordingly. The doctoral programme Politics, Power and Language offers this interdisciplinary research context. Co-operation with actors in civic education in Tyrol in the context of Master's theses is actively encouraged.

3. Establishment of a contact point for all stakeholders in the field of civic education

The CEHub views civic education as a cross-cutting issue. Participation, involvement and social education affect the work of many voluntary organisations and NGOs in Tyrol. These can also be activated as important partners for civic education in schools. The CEHub offers a pool of counselling and networking services and supports civil society education providers in the further development and quality assurance of nationwide services and low-threshold access, especially in rural regions.

Accordingly, the CEHub pursues the following research and teaching-relevant goals:

research into the media and information behaviour of young people in the social sphere as well as interactions between science, technology (development) and society,
the establishment of an original, school-based and extracurricular educational programme for young people and adults in line with the third mission goals of the University of Innsbruck,
the active, theory-led teaching of science and democracy.
