Business and Industry

Universität Innsbruck is one of the leading institutions for research and development both on a national and international academic scale. To further develop their services and products, international, national and regional entrepreneurs make use of the research competence of the university’s scientists.

In recent years, the has bundled its knowledge transfer efforts and now offers with the Transfer Office Science - Business - Society, an optimal infrastructure for networking science and business, which provides support in the search for suitable cooperation partners from science, and also, for example, a career service.

Interesting technology offers can also be viewed via the projekt.service.büro, which supports scientists in making contact with funding bodies and project partners and ensures legal compliance for the university and company partners by professionally drawing up cooperation agreements. The projekt.service.büro has been responsible for patenting and licensing since 2004.

With the Uni-Holding (Universität Innsbruck Unternehmensbeteiligungsgesellschaft mbH), founded in 2008, an institution has been created that participates in commercially oriented spin-offs of the University of Innsbruck. It accompanies start-ups and offers active investment management to existing and potential spin-offs.

The close networking of science and industry is also pushed through participation in competence centers and strategically oriented intermediary institutions.

As one of the mandates of the University is to undertake research, these centres and service offices provide companies with a huge pool of researchers. To strengthen and sharpen its profile the University has established seven major research areas:

In addition, there are 2 research platforms (interfaculty collaboration) and 47 research centres. At 16 faculties und 81 departments, over 3.500 PhD students generate new knowledge in their PhD projects. The goal of these and future projects is also to answer questions arising in the fields of industry, politics and society. A precise description of study performances and competences acquired during the study period fosters transparency of academic qualifications. Employability increases, consistent descriptions following standardized international guidelines facilitate access to labour markets abroad. The Diploma Supplement therefore fosters mobility.

Spin-off enterprises

Another result of excellent and application-oriented research is the foundation of a number of very successful spin-off companies from the University of Innsbruck, such as one of the world's leading manufacturers of hearing implants MED-EL, the technology companies Ionicon Analytik, AQT (Alpine Quantum Technologies) and PQC (Parity Quantum Computing), Onlim, and many more.

The entire list of our spin-offs can be found here: Investment portfolio.

Technical Testing and Research Laboratory of the University of Innsbruck (TVFA)

Another important service offered to entrepreneurs, in particular for those in the construction industry, is the Technical Testing and Research Laboratory of the University of Innsbruck (TVFA), which became an accredited laboratory in 2008.

Tests and research are performed on non-metals: compression tests, force- and deformation-controlled bend tests, tensile splitting strength test, bond tensile strength and abrasion resistance tests, determination of elastic parameters (E-modulus) and material properties as well as parameters of air bubble entrainment; tests of water permeability, frost resistance, frost-de-icing salt resistance, capillary absorbency and technological wet concrete and premix mortar data.  In addition, mechanical-technological tests and research are carried out on binders, concrete aggregates, concrete and mortar additives, concrete goods, building stones and timber building elements.

In the field of metallic materials and construction materials, tests to determine mechanical parameters of metallic materials (destructive tests) are carried out as well as test to determine fatigue strength of vehicles for aerial passenger lines.

Accredited test norms are shown in the accreditation document. Besides accredited test procedures, tests that are not in the accredited field are carried out, for which the TVFA has the necessary equipment and experience.

Visual Interaction Lab 1669 - Cooperation Project between the Research Cluster Scientific Computing and the Central Computer Service (ZID)

Visual Interaction Lab 1669 (VISLAB1669) is the visualization lab of the research area Scientific Computing, which is operated in close cooperation by the IT-Service of the University of Innsbruck (ZID). It enables state-of-the-art data analysis with a visualization wall (resolution of 5K, stereoscopic 3D display, dimensions of 3 x 1.7 meters) and additional VR glasses. Both are integrated with Three10's ThreePort presentation software and can be used together. The lab is available to all members of the Scientific Computing research focus. The Visual Interaction Lab 1669 was financed by the Förderkreis 1669 and the University of Innsbruck.
