Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 4 semesters or 120 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits. (One ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours.)

(1) In the context of the specialisations “Special Subject Communication” and “Literature- and Media Communication” further compulsory modules amounting to 42.5 ECTS-Credits are to be completed. In the context of the specialisation “Conference Interpreting” further compulsory modules amounting to 52.5 ECTS-Credits are to be completed.

(2) In the context of the specialisations “Special Subject Communication” and “Literature- and Media Communication” (limited electives on the curriculum § 7 Subsection 2 No. 1) electives amounting to 20 ECTS-Credits are to be completed. In the context of the specialisation “Conference Interpreting” elective modules amounting to 10 ECTS-Credits are to be completed.

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Master's Programme Translation Studies is based on subject-specific skills acquired within the bachelor's programme and, in additon to knowledge in translation theory and career planning according to the three possible specializations in subject-related communication, literary and media communication and conference interpreting, it provides knowledge, techniques and skills for professional performance of highly qualified translation-specific tasks. The specialization in subject-related communication deals with translation of highly specialised texts from different disciplines, which requires especially competent handling of state-of-the-art translation technology, sound knowledge of the principles of terminology as well as of economical techniques in order to autonomously become acquainted with a field.

The specialization in literary and media communication acquaints students with traditional and innovative forms of literary translation as well as the most diverse manifestations of multimedia translation that emerged lately in the fields of literature, film, television, musical theatre, publicity etc.

The training as a conference interpreter includes especially scientific examination of psycholinguistic and cognitive factors of interpreting, acquisition of economical research techniques as well as intense practical training in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting based on highly specialised texts of practical relevance.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Graduates possess highly specialised knowledge in the fields of subject-related communication, literary and media communication, conference interpreting. They are able to apply their competences in subject-related translation or literary and media translation or simultaneous and consecutive interpreting by independently formulate and substantiate scientific arguments and to find innovative solutions to problems.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the specialisation in subject-related communication may perform manifold language-related tasks in international large and medium enterprises, supranational political organisations or scientific institutions or work as freelance translators.

Graduates of the specialisation in media communication are trained for highly qualified language-related tasks in culture and science business (e.g. in publishing houses, advertising agencies, firm production companies).

Graduates of the specialisation in conference interpreting find qualified jobs at international political, diplomatic, cultural and humanitarian organisations as well as multinational enterprises. Conference interpreters also work as freelancers.

Within the scope of the Study Programme, a Supplementary Programme corresponding to 45 ECTS-Credits may be passed.
