Studies Induction and Orientation Stage (STEOP)

(1) The following exams have to be taken during the studies induction and orientation phase, which takes place in the first semester:

1. School as an Educational Institution and Role of the Teacher, VO 2, 2 ECTS-Credits
2. Introduction to English Synchronic Linguistics, VO 2, 2.5 ECTS-Credits
   
3. Introduction to English Phonetics and Phonology, VO 2, 2.5 ECTS-Credits
   

(2) Before the full completion of the introductory study and orientation phase, students can participate in courses amounting to 22 ECTS credits.

General Information

Recommended Course Sequence

The exemplary course sequence given below is recommended for full-time students beginning their study programme in the winter semester. The table shows one possible course sequence for the bachelor's programme and is not compulsory. Delays resulting from repeated examinations are not taken into account.

The standard duration of the study programme is 6 semesters or 180 ECTS-Credits, whereby according to the Universities Act of 2002, a workload of 1,500 (real) hours per academic year must be fulfilled, corresponding to 60 ECTS-Credits (one ECTS-Credit is equivalent to a workload of 25 hours).

Qualification Profile and Skills

The Secondary School Teacher Training Programme (General Education) qualifies its graduates as teachers in the selected subjects of general education / specializations for all secondary schools (Neue Mittelschule, Polytechnische Schule, Academic Secondary Schools,  Intermediate and Higher Technical and Vocational Schools). This study programme also meets the requirements for teaching in intermediate and higher schools in the South Tyrol *. It consists of a Bachelor’s Programme and a subsequent Master’s Programme. It covers training in general education science, a pedagogical-practical training and a subject-specific and subject-didactic education in the two selected teaching subjects.

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training in the subject of English are able to design learning processes in English lessons in a competent and creative way and play a leading, advisory and evaluating role. They can apply their skills acquired during their studies in such a way that they enable the learners to express themselves adequately in the English language with regard to the situation, the learners’ age and the according to their level of achievement. The primary qualification is teaching the English language. This implies a confident and adequate handling of verbal and written forms with regard to the age and the respective situation. The future teachers have gained insights into the functions and functioning of the English language during their theoretical linguistic training, and against this background they are able to adequately and efficiently plan and hold their lessons and to select teaching aids and methods appropriate to the specific situation. The training in literary science and text analysis enables the graduates to adequately fulfil the educational and teaching tasks set out in the curricula. This includes both the ability to select literary and other English-language texts appropriate for the competence level of the pupils, as well as the competence to pass on appropriate reading strategies and methods of analysis to the pupils. Their training in cultural studies enables the graduates to give the pupils insights into the countries of the target language.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Appropriate productive and receptive English language skills; linguistically based understanding of language in general and of the English language in particular; approaches to English-language texts and the ability to interpret them in consideration of different contexts; theory-supported analysis of cultural topics; awareness for the necessity to continuously follow media news on the different target-language countries; familiarity with the latest state of research in language teaching and testing as well as knowledge in the field of language acquisition research.

Future Prospects: Occupational Profiles and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor’s Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) are admitted to the corresponding Master’s Programme and can provisionally start their teaching service in the chosen general education subject in secondary schools to complete the Induction and Orientation Phases.
