Prof Brandl Prize at the University of Innsbruck
On the basis of an authorisation granted by the wife of the late Honorary Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernst Brandl, the "Prof. Brandl Prize" is awarded at the University of Innsbruck. The prize is determined anew each year by the foundation on the basis of the proceeds. In 2023, it amounted to EUR 4,000.
The Prof. Brandl Prize is intended as recognition for particularly innovative, future-oriented achievements that contribute to overcoming the difficulties of our time, which have arisen through the unrestrained realisation of all scientific progress, and to ensuring a future worth living.
The subject matter should be in the field of biotechnology, genetic engineering, enzyme technology or cell culture technology, but may also belong to chemistry or physics and must have improvements as its content, which are aimed at the well-being of humans, the environmentally friendly production of active substances, energy, raw materials or at ensuring food security for humans and animals or at solving our environmental problems.
The papers or patents must have been published or accepted for publication by a renowned scientific journal or deposited with the Austrian Patent Office no more than 2 years prior to submission.
Austrian citizens working or studying in Tyrol or foreign nationals who have worked or studied in Tyrol for at least five years, have completed a relevant degree programme and have not received this award in the last five years. These deadlines are based on the closing date for submissions. The deadline date of this call will be used to determine the time limits.
According to this regulation, works from the following fields are eligible for the prize now to be announced:
- Faculty of Biology,
- Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy,
- Faculty of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences,
- Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics,
- Faculty of Technical Sciences
All Faculties mentioned are those of the University of Innsbruck.
- A high-profile paper, as well as monographs (including dissertations or habilitations) that have been published or accepted for publication by a renowned scientific journal in the last two years (i.e. 2022 or later).
- Or a patent that has been deposited with the Austrian Patent Office in the last two years (i.e. 2022 or later).
- The work/patent must have an Affiliation with the UIBK.
- In the case of joint papers, only the main responsible author (first author or corresponding author) may submit in agreement with the co-authors.

- Abstractof the submitted scientific work or the submitted patent or patent application, including the reasons why the Prof. Brandl Prize should be awarded for this scientific work / this submitted patent / this patent application, maximum 2 pages in total.
- Short CV in 7-10 sentences in German as a docx document (will be used for the speech at the ceremony)
- Detailed CV for the review in pdf format; list of relevant publications of the applicant
- Declaration of consent of the co-authors (see template under further information)
The next tender is expected to take place again in 2027.
According to the donor's wish, the prize will be awarded undivided every two years for the time being for works from the field of the University of Innsbruck.
A committee consisting of members of the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, Informatics and Physics and Engineering Sciences of the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Society for Molecular Biosciences and Biotechnology then selects the paper/patent deemed worthy of the award and proposes it to the "Prof. Ernst Brandl Foundation" in Schwaz for funding.
The research prize is expected to be awarded at a ceremony in May 2025.
The German version prevails over the English one in case of deviations.
