About us

The Institute of Experimental Physics is part of Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck. Our institute conducts experimental research in many fields, including quantum information, spectroscopy, quantum optics, cold atoms, quantum gases, solid state physics, photonics and superconducting quantum circuits.

Our institute, with its extensive collection of lectures and practical courses, is mainly responsible for experimental teaching and practical courses in the Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes.

Our history goes back to 1742 and the foundation of an "armarium" of physical instruments at that time. Many valuable instruments have been preserved and are on virtual display at our Museum pages. The highlight is the astronomical clock that Empress Maria Theresa donated to the institute in 1776.
