Welcoming new employees

A structured induction increases job satisfaction and performance in the team.

The mentoring model at the University of Innsbruck ensures that new employees are integrated quickly.

Support during the start-up phase is limited to a maximum of three months.

Introduction phases

Measures must be taken to familiarise and introduce the new colleague before they start work.

Once the position has been confirmed, the manager informs the team about the new employee and their area of responsibility. At the same time, the mentor is introduced as a starting mentor who will support the manager during the successful induction. The Checklists for managers and for onboarding mentors facilitate joint coordination and ensure a smooth start.

The supervisors determine who is responsible for the technical induction and draw up the induction plan. They also ensure that important information is passed on from the predecessor to the new employee in the interests of knowledge management.

On the first working day, the focus is on getting to know the colleagues and introducing them to the enrolment plan. In addition to self-study of important documents, the new colleague can be given their first concrete work assignment, which can be completed on the same day. This enables an initial sense of achievement. New employees should not be inundated with information.

The Information homepage of the University of Innsbruck serves as a guide. It contains clearly organised information for self-study:

  • Organisation and structure of the university
  • Service and administrative facilities
  • Representation and counselling facilities
  • Useful information for getting started

New employees not only need support on their first day at work, but also selective support thereafter. An individually tailored induction and training plan should be well-balanced in order to avoid both under-challenging and over-challenging them. Regular feedback meetings help to accompany and continuously improve this process.
