Translation means making foreign languages and cultures accessible, overcoming distance and alterity in order to convey the meaning of a message, an utterance or a text. Translation studies is concerned with the study of translation, i.e. translating and interpreting in all its forms and language combinations. In contrast to linguistics, languages are not a direct object of study for translation studies, but rather a tool and therefore instrumental for achieving the overriding goal of communication. With this in mind, the Department of Translation Studies trains translation experts in German, English, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish.
