Community Interpreting
Welcome to the website of the Working Group for Community Interpreting at the department of Translation Studies at the University of Innsbruck
On this page we have compiled some information on the subject of Community Interpreting (CI). CI is also known as dialogue interpreting. It is the interpreting of conversations in the social and medical field, i.e. at public offices, at the doctor's, at school, in social institutions and much more.
Austrian Working Group for Dialogue Interpreting
The translation studies department of the Universities of Graz, Innsbruck and Vienna work together with UNHCR Austria, among others, as the Dialogue Interpreting Platform to analyse the quality of interpreting for public institutions, to determine the need and to improve the quality of language mediation. As part of this collaboration, an overview of existing training, awareness-raising and certification programmes for community interpreting in Austria was compiled. The database, in which all programmes can be accessed, sorted by federal state, can be found here:

Training pyramid for dialogue interpreting
The various training, awareness-raising and certification programmes differ greatly in terms of scope, content focus and quality. The working group has therefore drawn up a training pyramid in which the various measures are listed and can be categorised in terms of their quality.
