Translation Technology

Translation technology refers to any form of technology that supports or performs translation. It is thus distinct from the broader term of language technology, which also includes voice control of devices, recognition of spoken language and language synthesis, language analysis and much more. Translation technology is divided into computer-assisted translation for translators and interpreters with all the applications that facilitate translation and interpreting for humans, and machine translation and programming in the field of translation. These topics are given particular consideration in the specialisation of the Master's degree course in Specialised Translation and Translation Technology (see related information) and in the research area of automation (see related information).

Our degree programmes include a total of 12 courses with specific translation technology content, whereby translation technology is also used in practice in numerous other courses with different objectives. In these courses, students have the opportunity to work with a wide range of computer-aided translation and interpreting tools and language resources that are currently widely used in the translation industry.

CAT, CAI, corpus tools and language resources

A selection of modern software tools for computer-aided translation is available on all PCs at our department. Our current CAT (computer-aided-translation) and CAI (computer-aided-interpreting) software packages as well as tools for corpus analysis and language resources are listed below; these may also change depending on the type of course and semester programme.
