BEJOND -
Stormwater treatment beyond original design events and planned operating conditions

Funding:

Partner:

Duration: 09/2020 - 02/2023

Project objectives:

The research project deals with different stormwater and mixed water treatment plants and their functioning beyond the design event and scheduled operating conditions and considers not only the functioning of the individual plants but also the possible impairments of neighbouring plants and the surrounding area.

The following questions are therefore to be answered in this project:

  • How do stormwater treatment plants designed according to standards react to exceptional events? For which types of systems does the design practice and structural design include safety features, and for which systems can a disproportionate increase in, for example, runoff and a possible reduction in treatment performance be expected?
  • How is the resilience of different plant types to be assessed, i.e. which plants are damaged by exceptional events such as exceeding the design event, and which plants remain fully functional even after the event?
  • How do climatic (climate change), spatial structural (urbanisation) and societal changes (demographics) affect the dimensioning and resilience of urban water management facilities and urban flood prevention?
  • In what form is it necessary to explicitly take extraordinary events into account in the design, where is it possible to react to extraordinary events, for example as part of flood prevention and due to design specifications?
  • What options are there for flood prevention and consideration of exceptional events (creation of retention volumes, emergency waterways, etc.) and how are these to be financially assessed in a risk approach?
  • Which neighbouring infrastructures, in particular urban water management infrastructures, are at risk if stormwater treatment facilities are overloaded or fail?
  • How can specific facilities be analysed in terms of their risk of failure and what strategies are useful for reducing the impact on the facilities and their surroundings?
  • What can an incident management and communication strategy for incidents look like?
