The wastewater treatment plant in interaction with the waste and energy industry: A German-Austrian dialogue (COMITO)

Project description:
In numerous digestion towers of sewage treatment plants in Bavaria and Austria, there are free capacities that can be utilised with the help of so-called co-digestion. For this purpose, organic substances that are generally easily degradable (so-called co-substrates) are added to the digestion process in order to increase the production of digester gas. The energy converted from this can make an important contribution to the energy transition (e.g. provision of balancing energy) and thus to climate protection. The rural/alpine region has a special potential for co-substrates - from the dairy industry (flotation sludge from dairies) and tourism (food waste) - which poses particular challenges due to its composition and its highly seasonal nature. There is also potential for optimisation in co-digestion.
The following aspects form the main content of the project:
- Development of co-substrates: Potential assessments for flotate sludge from the dairy industry and biowaste from tourism
- Digester gas production: Laboratory and semi-industrial trials to determine digester gas potential and derive feeding strategies
- Influence on sewage sludge degradation: Laboratory and semi-technical tests on the influence of co-substrates on the degradation of sewage sludge
- Efficient digester gas utilisation: Efficient digester gas utilisation as a contribution to the energy transition and climate protection
- Ecological assessment: Determination of energy and climate balances as the basis for an ecological assessment
- Economic and technical evaluation: Preparation of a cost comparison calculation
- Derivation of recommendations for action
