Persistent identifiers

DOI Service of the University of Innsbruck

The University of Innsbruck enables the allocation of DOIs for digital objects published and/or stored by platform operators of the University of Innsbruck.

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a permanent persistent identifier that is used for labelling, citing and linking digital objects. The DOI name is permanently linked to the object and, by means of a DOI resolver, allows the object to be referenced even if the storage location changes. Structured metadata, i.e. information about the digital object, is mandatory for the allocation of DOIs and a prerequisite for the objects to be searchable in suitable portals.

A DOI consists of two parts: a constant prefix that is assigned to an institution or platform and an individual suffix that uniquely identifies the digital object. The DOI service of the University of Innsbruck is operated by TU Wien (DOI-Services Austria) together with the registration agency DataCite and is free of charge.

Who is responsible for DOI allocation?

The University and Provincial Library of Tyrol, Department of Digital Services (DOI contact point) is responsible for information on DOIs and for DOI allocation at the University of Innsbruck.

Who can obtain DOIs?

Platform operators of the University of Innsbruck who can guarantee permanent, reliable data accessibility in the sense of the concept of persistent identifiers are authorised to obtain DOIs. For DOI allocation, an agreement is made between the platform operators of the University of Innsbruck and the DOI contact point in which the prefix and the structure of the suffix are defined.

DOI sample agreement

How are DOIs registered?

DOIs are registered in accordance with the contractual agreement between the University of Innsbruck and the registration agency DataCite, represented by TU Wien (DOI-Services Austria). The agreement between the DOI contact point and the platform operator also specifies whether the individual DOIs are to be registered by the DOI contact point or automatically via API.

What are the requirements for the digital objects?

  • A DOI name must refer to a landing page, not to the object itself.
  • DOIs are assigned to digital objects that are of long-term scientific interest.
  • The platform operators must ensure that the content of the digital objects complies with the general rules of good scientific practice.
  • Every digital object with a DOI must be accessible online via a URL and HTTP(S) or, in the case of access restrictions, at least the landing page.
  • The choice of file format for digital objects is generally open, but their long-term archivability should be taken into account.
  • An object with a DOI may not be modified. Separate DOIs must be registered for modified, updated objects.
  • The metadata of the digital objects must comply with the requirements of DataCite metadata schemas in the currently valid version.

Where are the guidelines for DOI allocation regulated?

The guidelines for DOI allocation are set out in"Institutional Policy for the Registration of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) at the University of Innsbruck".

Where can I find an example of a platform that obtains DOIs?

An example of a platform that obtains DOIs via this service can be found at Research Group Transient Spaces & Societies, which operates a scientific blog: https://www.transient-spaces.org/blog/

For individual digital documents that you would like to publish online and obtain a DOI for, uploading to the repository is a prerequisite. Only in this way can we, as the DOI issuing organisation, guarantee that the object remains permanently accessible. Further information on the repository can be found at here.

All digital objects that are published in the institutional repository of the University of Innsbruck (https://diglib.uibk.ac.at/) are automatically assigned a URN (Uniform Resource Name) as a persistent identifier. If you obtain a DOI for the object published in the repository, this is currently assigned in addition to the URN.

ORCID

ORCID is the abbreviation for Open Researcherand Contributor ID and also refers to the global and non-profit organisation responsible for the creation and maintenance of unique identifiers for researchers (ORCID iD).

The ORCID iD consists of an alpha-numeric identifier that uniquely distinguishes individual researchers from other researchers and enables them to manage research outputs. The use of ORCID is free of charge for researchers.

The University of Innsbruck has been part of the ORCID Austria consortium since 2019. One of the most important goals of this consortium is to establish ORCID iD as the primary unique personal identifier for researchers in Austria. The University of Innsbruck recommends in its Guideline for indicating affiliation with the University of Innsbruck all members of the university to create an ORCID profile and to keep it up to date.

Please note that the official university name "University of Innsbruck" or "University of Innsbruck" must be used as the affiliation when registering the ORCID iD.

Further information about ORCID and the registration of your own ORCID iD can be found on the ORCID-Website.
