The Community Interpreting university course is aimed at bilingual or multilingual people who wish to train and develop their skills, techniques and methods as community interpreters and want to use and apply them in their work with public authorities, public institutions and organisations.

Qualification profile

  • General basic knowledge of interpreting
  • Knowledge of interpreting modes, techniques and strategies
  • Information on preparation and follow-up for an interpreting assignment (research skills)
  • Knowledge of the role of a community interpreter (role awareness, distancing, dealing with conflicts, compensation strategies)
  • Awareness of one’s own limits and possibilities
  • Basic knowledge of structures and processes in different fields of operation
  • Knowledge of framework conditions of interpreting missions

Target group

 Persons

  • …who are bilingual or multilingual
  • …who already work as community interpreters or want to work as community interpreters without subject-specific training (e.g. hospitals, police, public authorities, child welfare services, Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA), NGOs etc.)
  • number of participants: 20 persons

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the German language (B1)
  • Knowledge of at least another language relevant to community interpreting (CI) (mother tongue or at least level B2 acc. to the European Framework of Reference)

The participants have to take care of their insurances
(health, accident and liability insurance) themselves.

Graduates of the university course Community Interpreting have the possibility to be registered on the list of lay interpreters in Tyrol.
