Models as tools: The use of model organisms to study biological questions
Abstract: Model organisms (MO) are widely used in the life-sciences to address research questions, study human diseases, and develop therapeutic approaches.In this talk, drawing on examples in botany, discussions in neuroscience, and philosophical concepts, I propose a conceptual framework to better understand the role and functioning of MO in scientific practice. I show that the use of MO provides a variety of opportunities to study phenomena of interest; however, users always must take into account potential limitations of MO and adopt appropriate countermeasures.
