Regulated Rage in Carol Shield's Academic Satire Swann
Nora Foster Stovel (University of Alberta)
Shield’s 1987 novel Swann: A Mystery reveals her rage towards misogyny and academe, which she satirizes acutely through her characters. Stovel will argue revenge resulting from personal injuries and insults to be Shields´s motive for writing Swann.
Rebelling against traditional forms of fiction as well as possessing a feminist agenda, “Shields gives us a scintillating new form of fiction: comic metacriticism.” – Nora Foster Stovel
