Searching for Winnetou

Film screening on Nov. 17, 2022, at 6 pm, at the Leokino
Winnetou

Screening of the documentary film SEARCHING FOR WINNETOU and discussion with Ojibway director Drew Hayden Taylor about his quest to understand the roots of the German obsession with Native North Americans.

Inspired by 19th century author Karl May and his series of WINNETOU novels, thousands of Germans attempt to live and dress as First Nations people. These enthusiasts have inspired an entire industry of live performance, film, “authentic” collectibles and “North American Native lifestyle” vacation camps. In SEARCHING FOR WINNETOU, Drew Hayden Taylor explores the controversy surrounding cultural appropriation of Indigenous culture in German speaking Europe in an innovative, hilarious, unnerving, yet inspiring way.

Originally from the Curve Lake First Nations, in Central Ontario, Drew has spent the last two decades travelling the world and writing about it from an Indigenous perspective. He is an award-winning playwright, author, columnist, film maker and lecturer. Website: https://www.drewhaydentaylor.com/

This event is organized in cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in Vienna and the Canadian Studies Centre of the University of Innsbruck.
