Stephan was born in Stuttgart, Germany and studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart and the ETH Zurich. He started his PhD studies under the guidance of Prof. Dr. B. Sarkar at the University of Stuttgart in 2010, but moved to the Freie Universität Berlin in 2012, to finish his thesis in the Sarkar group in 2014. During this time, Stephan was exploring the versatility of triazole-derived mesoionic carbenes in catalysis using late transition metals. Afterwards, he joined the Arnold Lab at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as a DAAD Postdoc scholar, where he studied the coordiantion behaviour and utility of N-heterocyclic carbenes and marcocyclic ligands (e.g. TMTAA and Corroles) in the chemistry of the actinides and lanthanide.
In 2017, starting his independent career, Stephan was appointed Juniorprofessor at Paderborn University (non-tenure track). He left Paderborn in 2020 when he was appointed Assistant Professor in Coordination Chemistry at the University of Innsbruck. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024.
His research interest focuses on the use of N-heterocyclic and mesoionic carbenes, as well as phoshpine functionlized ligands in the chemistry of the early transition metals, lanthanides and actinides and their applications in homogeneous catalysis, molecular magnetism and small molecule activation or functionalization.
