Spatio-temporal measurements of turbulence in wind parks and complex terrain with a multicopter UAS fleet

Small uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) are versatile tools to probe the atmospheric boundary layer. With single multicopter UAS, vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and wind can be collected. With a fleet of multiple UAS, distributed measurements at most flexible measurement locations are possible. We operate a fleet of 35 multicopters that are capable of turbulence resolving measurements of the three-dimensional wind vector and temperature. The wind algorithm was verified in wind tunnel experiments and validated in multiple field experiments. We show results of the FESST@MOL and FESSTVaL campaign, the TEAMx-pre-campaign 2022 and measurements upstream and in the wake of wind turbines. In all cases, the advantage of simultaneous wind measurements at multiple locations is demonstrated.
