Students are introduced to major concepts in macroecology, with a focus on determinants of species ranges, the distribution of biodiversity, species interactions, and human-biodiversity interactions. In the lecture component, we discuss major global and regional biodiversity patterns, some underlying theory about the distribution of biodiversity, and introduce methods for studying ecology at large spatial and temporal scales. In the seminar, we discuss some current macroecological literature, and we learn how to use public datasets to work through some common macroecological analyses (e.g., species distribution models). Some experience with R will be helpful in working through the examples in the seminar.
