Admission and supervisor at UIBK

In order to find a supervisor at UIBK, please contact the respective  faculty or department directly. If the main purpose of your visit is research, it is not necessary to enrol as a student at the University of Innsbruck. However, it is theoretically possible to enrol for a limited period of time as an incoming mobility student (=non-degree seeking; enrolment for 1 or 2 semesters max.) if you meet certain deadlines and requirements. Enrolment holds some advantages for you such as accident and liability insurance while working on campus, your own LFU:online and webmail account, the possibility to take courses at UIBK and various student discounts. For more information on this, please contact international-incoming@uibk.ac.at.

Please note that no ECTS credits can be awarded for exclusive research activities for BA/MA/PhD theses or other scientific papers. Incoming students can only obtain ECTS credits for exams that they passed and courses that they successfully completed.

WIFI, VPN, access to student platforms & library

If you have eduroam at your home university, you should be able to access the WIFI network (called “eduroam”) with your login credentials from home. If your home university does not have eduroam or if you cannot access this network for any other reason, your supervisor can submit a request with our IT services (= ZID Benutzer*innenverwaltung) for a private account on your behalf, so you can access our other WIFI network (called “UIBK”).

Should you consider submitting such a request, please also discuss with your supervisor if you need access to other UIBK services (username/password [for access to WIFI and shared PCs on campus], student email, VPN for remote access to digital resources at the library, OLAT and/or LFU:online [platforms for students, where course materials, grades etc. are posted]).

Private persons can get a  library card without having to register as students at UIBK.

Other useful information

• Make sure you have sufficient  health insurance coverage before coming to Austria. Please also check if you have personal liability insurance in case of accidents and/or damage while on campus.
• Get in touch with the  Erasmus Student Network if you would like to meet your peers. ESN are a group of local students who organise events for incomings and also offer a buddy network, that you can sign up for before your arrival.
• Our  Language Centre offers German courses of varying duration for a fee.

Erasmus+ traineeship

Students from universities in EU/EEA member states as well as candidate countries can apply for funding for an Erasmus+ traineeship at their home home university, if the latter holds an Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education.

We do not offer or organise traineeships in the International Relations Office. Should you wish to apply for an Erasmus+ traineeship at the University of Innsbruck, please contact the respective faculty or department directly. Please note that the University of Innsbruck and the Medical University of Innsbruck are two different institutions.

Short-term/blended/virtual mobility

Aurora courses

Within the framework of the Aurora European Universities Alliance, the University of Innbruck offers short-term/blended/virtual mobility options for students from other Aurora universities each semester. More information about the courses and the registration procedure can be found on the website of the UIBK Aurora Office.

Freemover (non-exchange students)

The University of Innsbruck does not have a free-mover programme. If you are an international student and wish to study at the University of Innsbruck temporarily outside of an existing exchange programme, you have the possibility to seek admission as a regular student even if you do not plan to complete your degree in Innsbruck. More details regarding tuition fee, available study programmes and  admission criteria can be found on the respective websites. You should also look into course prerequisites, since some modules are only open to students who have previously completed certain introductory courses. In case you do not meet some course prerequisites, please check with the Dean of Studies for your study programme if courses from your home university can be recognised.

Please note that the International Relations Office is not responsible for free-movers and you have to organise your stay yourself!

Exception: CEEPUS free-movers should get in touch with the CEEPUS Office first and can get additional information from international-incoming@uibk.ac.at afterward.

Summer/winter schools

Summer or winter schools at the University of Innsbruck are university courses of up to 15 ECTS credits. They are blocked, take place during the lecture-free period and usually come with a cost. Students who complete the summer/winter school receive a confirmation of participation or a certificate (if ECTS credits are awarded for a summer/winter school). The target group are young scientists, international and Austrian students who want to enter into an intensive dialogue with academic staff, professionals and students with different professional and cultural backgrounds.
